The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has announced the launch of Matter 1.4 on Thursday, a significant update for the Matter ecosystem that enhances the unified capabilities of smart home devices. This new version, now available for implementation by manufacturers, introduces key features designed to improve user experience, network reliability, and more energy management within smart homes.
Matter 1.4 introduces Matter-certified Home Routers and Access Points (HRAP), which provide a robust foundation for smart home networks. These devices, which can be home routers, modems, or access points, integrate both Wi-Fi and Thread technologies, significantly enhancing the reliability and interoperability of Matter devices.
With HRAP, Matter now further enhances Multi-Admin, which simplifies the process of managing smart devices across multiple platforms. Previously, users had to separately connect devices to different ecosystems, but this update allows for easier and automatic connections with a single user consent, streamlining the multi-system smart home management.
Energy management capabilities are expanded as well, with the update supporting a new range of energy devices, including solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps. This is part of a growing trend among consumers toward energy efficiency, with Matter 1.4 paving the way for automated energy management and cost-saving measures for homeowners. With updated features for monitoring energy consumption and scheduling, users can now optimize energy use for appliances and electric vehicles more effectively.
Furthermore, updates in sensor technology have enhanced occupancy sensing capabilities, allowing for improved detection and customizable settings.
The alliance continues to collaborate with its member companies to refine and enhance the Matter protocol, which has already been adopted by millions of households since its introduction in 2022. The ongoing commitment to interoperability and simplicity underlines the importance of Matter 1.4 as a key evolution in smart home technology.
